Sciatica nerve pain

Sciatica nerve pain is a form of nerve inflammation very common in modern society, that can greatly impair the daily life of those affected.

The sciatic nerve, which begins in the lower back and moves down into the leg, is the largest nerve in the human body. When it is pinched or pressured, it can become irritated, which over time leads to nerve inflammation and swelling of the muscles.

The condition may be caused by a displaced spinal disc, but also by work that requires prolonged sitting and little physical activity, or by lifting heavy weights. Pregnancy, injury and some illnesses may also be involved. The condition can also be worsened by cold damp weather as well as emotional stress.

Common symptoms include :

  • Pain starting from the lower back and radiating into the leg, usually on one side of the body
  • Numbness and tingling
  • Cramps and spasms
  • Burning sensations
  • Weakness of the muscles

Once the condition settles in, even everyday movements such as coughing or bending over to pick up a baby can become triggers.

You can start managing the pain at home by practising a good sitting posture with a straight back and applying hot and cold packs.

Acupuncture has been proven to be a very effective treatment for sciatica nerve pain. At the Nei Jing center of Chinese medicine, we combine it with several other powerful methods, such as laser acupuncture, Tuina and cupping.

These methods work by restoring balance to the circulation of energy in the body. They safely and naturally reduce nerve inflammation and relieve muscle tension and swelling, and can even encourage a displaced vertebra to come back into place.
