Anxiety is a normal human emotion

Anxiety is a normal human emotion that most people experience from time to time, as a reaction to stress before an exam, a job interview or a public performance.

Sometimes, this occasional response becomes a persistent one that is never fully turned off, or can easily be reactivated in various situations that present no actual danger. Such chronic anxiety can overwhelm and dominate a person’s life, greatly impacting their work, study and ability to socialize on a daily basis.

Restlessness, racing thoughts, disturbed sleep and nervous habits such as nail biting are all very common manifestations of anxiety. It often involves physical symptoms as well, such as :

  • heart palpitations,
  • breathlessness,
  • muscle tension,
  • sweating,
  • dizziness,
  • panic attacks.
Over time, chronic anxiety can lead to high blood pressure, digestive and skin issues, and sometimes result in other conditions such as depression. Long term stress, acute trauma and repressed emotions can all affect the normal balance of the body and give rise to the physical symptoms of anxiety. While some people are naturally more susceptible to stress than others, diet, lifestyle and environmental factors can sometimes be enough to cause or exacerbate anxious emotional states. Used on their own or in combination with counselling, acupuncture and Chinese herbs are very safe and powerful ways to address anxiety in all forms, by calming the nervous system, regulating hormone levels, inducing relaxation and improving sleep. Tuina massage, cupping and reflexology can also effectively help to release long-held emotional and muscular tension. At the Nei Jing center of Chinese medicine in Jerusalem, we use all of these methods, in combination with lifestyle and dietary advice, to help each person to reduce their anxiety response and return to a more peaceful and energetic state of being.
