Asthma in Children

Childhood asthma is a chronic condition very common in children today, characterized by recurring episodes of coughing and breathlessness. During an asthma attack, the airways into the lungs tighten, making breathing difficult.

Signs & Symptoms of Asthma in Children

Our patients and their parents report:

  • Frequent coughing, especially at night and during sports or play
  • A wheezing sound when breathing out
  • Shortness of breath, rapid breathing
  • Chest tightness or chest pain
  • Trouble sleeping caused by coughing, fatigue
  • Frequent colds

Triggers & Causes of Asthma in Children

Very often in our patients, asthma attacks involve some kind of allergic reaction. To trigger an attack, it is sometimes enough to be exposed to:

  • Pollens
  • Dust mites
  • Pet hair
  • Certain foods

Episodes triggered by unstable weather, air pollution and exercise are also common.

To our knowledge, a number of factors can contribute to the development of asthma in children, including:

  • Genetic predispositions
  • Repeated respiratory infections
  • The frequent use of antibiotics
  • Emotional stress
  • A diet rich in dairy products and processed foods

How We Treat Asthma in Children

Asthma is one of the pediatric conditions that we encounter the most often at our Chinese medicine clinic in Jerusalem, and we have developed a strong expertise in the treatment of its symptoms. Our goal is to reduce the severity and the frequency of attacks, by strengthening your child’s immune system and treating the underlying imbalances that may be at the root of the problem.

In order to do this, we will design an individualized, comprehensive treatment plan that may include:

  • Acupuncture and laser acupuncture
  • Chinese herbs
  • Tuina massage and cupping
  • Naturopathy and nutritional advice

People Say

Theresa is 5 years old, and she had been suffering from recurring bronchitis for more than a year, that turned into wheezing and asthmatic coughing. After a particularly bad episode, we had to bring her to the emergency room, and she was put on steroid medication. We were worried about the effect of these medications on the long term, and this is why we brought her to the Nei Jing center. She’s been treated with acupuncture and a herbal treatment, and we have been advised to make sure she doesn’t eat anything with cow’s milk, sugar or white flour in it. The attacks have completely gone now, and she only needs acupuncture once in a while at challenging times, like the change of season.

People Say

Our son Danny struggled with asthma since before he was one year old. Even with inhalers and daily treatments, it kept getting worse, to the point he was unable to do sports and was starting to have trouble sleeping. Another family member had good results with Chinese medicine before, and advised us to try it for him. He was treated with laser acupuncture and cupping for a few months, and taught simple breathing exercises. We’ve been able to reduce his medication progressively, and he hasn’t needed it for weeks now. There’s no words to describe how great it is to see him being able to play outside with his friends without worries!
