Asthma in Children
Childhood asthma is a chronic condition very common in children today, characterized by recurring episodes of coughing and breathlessness. During an asthma attack, the airways into the lungs tighten, making breathing difficult.
Signs & Symptoms of Asthma in Children
Our patients and their parents report:
- Frequent coughing, especially at night and during sports or play
- A wheezing sound when breathing out
- Shortness of breath, rapid breathing
- Chest tightness or chest pain
- Trouble sleeping caused by coughing, fatigue
- Frequent colds
Triggers & Causes of Asthma in Children
Very often in our patients, asthma attacks involve some kind of allergic reaction. To trigger an attack, it is sometimes enough to be exposed to:
- Pollens
- Dust mites
- Pet hair
- Certain foods
Episodes triggered by unstable weather, air pollution and exercise are also common.
To our knowledge, a number of factors can contribute to the development of asthma in children, including:
- Genetic predispositions
- Repeated respiratory infections
- The frequent use of antibiotics
- Emotional stress
- A diet rich in dairy products and processed foods
