Diarrhea in Children

Diarrhea refers to a condition marked by frequent bowel movements and loose, watery stools. It is much more common in children than adults, as their digestive system is weaker, and is a health concern shared by many parents.

Signs & Symptoms of Diarrhea in Children

The children we treat for episodes of diarrhea usually experience:

  • Frequent, watery stools
  • Abdominal pain
  • Bloating
  • Nausea

Diarrhea can be dangerous in very young children, as it can cause them to become dehydrated. In babies who cannot speak yet, we advise that parents look out for the following signs:

  • Less frequent urination
  • Dark urine
  • Thirst
  • Unusual drowsiness or irritability
  • Dry skin
  • Tearless crying

Causes of Diarrhea in Children

In our experience, episodes in diarrhea in children are often caused by:

  • Infections by bacteria, viruses or parasites
  • Food sensitivities (cow’s milk being very common)
  • Reactions to certain medicines
  • An excessive intake of sugar, including fruit juices

Haim came out of his football game one day, complaining of stomach pain. He seemed a little pale that morning, but nothing special, but suddenly started feeling very uncomfortable. We went back home quickly, and he had an episode of diarrhea that was very embarrassing for him. We put him to bed, but he had to go back to the bathroom every hour or so through the night. Nei Jing had a spot available, so we took him there the next day - he had acupuncture, and we had advice on teas that he could drink to help his digestive system, and his diarrhea resolved in about two days.

Our daughter is six months old, and a while ago she started to have diarrhea a lot. We thought it might be a food thing, so on the advice of the pediatrician we stopped giving her cow milk and any kind of fruit juice. It helped, but her digestion was still difficult, so the doctor advised us to go to Nei Jing. We were a little hesitant at first, but after about two weeks all the symptoms had completely disappeared.
