Earaches in Children
Earaches are one of the most common conditions in children, that we routinely treat at the Nei Jing center of Chinese medicine. It happens when the canals in the middle ear become swollen, most often because of a cold or the flu, trapping fluids inside the ear and causing an infection. Children are especially prone to ear infections, because their ear canals are smaller and they are less resistant to germs than adults.
Signs & Symptoms of Earaches in Children
The most common symptoms that we see among our patients include the following:
- Ear pain and redness
- Pressure inside the ear
- Hearing problems
- A discharge of infected fluid from the ear
To parents of young infants who cannot verbally explain the symptoms they experience, we advise that they also look for sudden irritability, changes in appetite and difficulty sleeping.
Causes of Earaches in Children
In our experience, respiratory illnesses caused either by viruses or bacteria (such as a cold or the flu) are the most common factor that can trigger an ear infection. Other factors that could also contribute to the development of an infection include:
- Food sensitivities
- Emotional stress
- Cold, wet weather
How We Treat Earaches in Children
Time and time again in our practice we have noted that while children tend to become sick quicker than adults, they also recover faster. Our goal is to provide them with natural therapies that will help their body to heal itself from acute infections and prevent recurrence.
After a first consultation meeting during which we will assess your child’s specific symptom patterns, we will design for them a customized treatment program that may include acupuncture, needle-free laser acupuncture and herbs as well as lifestyle and nutritional advice.
