Grief
Even though it is the normal human response to loss, grief can be a terrible feeling, especially when it involves the loss of a loved one. Such extremely painful emotions often take a long time to process, and can affect you physically as well as emotionally.
Signs & Symptoms of Grief
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, grief and sadness are related to the lungs and the heart. To our knowledge, it is not uncommon for people suffering from prolonged grief to experience:
- Tiredness and insomnia
- Depression, anger and anxiety
- Difficulties focusing on work and everyday life
- Chest pain, palpitations
- Breathlessness, asthma
- In serious cases, pneumonia or heart disease
Causes of Grief
Extreme emotional loss, and especially unresolved grief, are often the cause of these symptoms for many of our patients. The loss of a loved one, but also of a beloved pet, a job, a house, or physical ability after an accident can all cause symptoms of grief. Old grief can still cause such physical manifestations, if it was never fully dealt with, and it is also not uncommon for children to pick up feelings of grief from other family members.
