Hypoglycemia

The term hypoglycemia refers to a clinical syndrome that occurs when the glucose levels in a person’s blood drop below normal. It is not a disease in itself, but usually signals an underlying health problem.

Signs & Symptoms

In our experience, hypoglycemia can cause the following symptoms, that sometimes mimic those of a panic attack:

  • Poor concentration, confusion
  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Hunger
  • Headaches, dizziness
  • Shaking and sweating
  • Fainting

Causes

Hypoglycemia is often present in people with diabetes, and can sometimes signal that a person is at risk of developing the condition. To our knowledge, there are many other factors however that can cause sudden or recurrent drops in blood sugar, including:

  • An improper diet
  • Food allergies and sensitivities
  • Skipping a meal
  • Weight issues
  • An eating disorder
  • Endocrine disturbances
  • Liver, heart or kidney disease
  • A reaction to certain medications
  • Stress

How we treat it

When treating hypoglycemia, our goal at the Nei Jing center of Chinese medicine in Jerusalem is to reduce the severity and frequency of symptoms, and to help the body to restore its energy levels. Because every case is different, we will build for each patient an appropriate, individualized treatment protocol that may include:

  • Acupuncture and laser acupuncture
  • Chinese herbs
  • Tuina and cupping
  • Reflexology
  • Naturopathic advice for lifestyle and nutrition

People Say

Our daughter Hannah started to have hypoglycemia at school. She couldn’t concentrate, and in some cases had to leave class because she wasn’t feeling well. We suspected anxiety or ADHD, but it turned out to be a blood sugar problem. A few acupuncture sessions at Nei Jing were enough to reduce the frequency of her episodes. The advice on nutrition that we received for her was also invaluable, and her symptoms completely disappeared.

People Say

I haven’t always been the most careful with my diet - for a long time, I’ve had a tendency to skip breakfast, and eat sugary snacks when hungry. To make things worse, I wasn’t sleeping enough, and started to have very bad episodes of mood swings and confusion. Nei Jing really helped me a lot with that, it was the best treatment that I’ve had for this problem. It took several sessions, and a lot of effort on my part to change my habits, but it was very effective and very worth it. Anika L.
