Hypoglycemia
The term hypoglycemia refers to a clinical syndrome that occurs when the glucose levels in a person’s blood drop below normal. It is not a disease in itself, but usually signals an underlying health problem.
Signs & Symptoms
In our experience, hypoglycemia can cause the following symptoms, that sometimes mimic those of a panic attack:
- Poor concentration, confusion
- Anxiety
- Irritability
- Hunger
- Headaches, dizziness
- Shaking and sweating
- Fainting
Causes
Hypoglycemia is often present in people with diabetes, and can sometimes signal that a person is at risk of developing the condition. To our knowledge, there are many other factors however that can cause sudden or recurrent drops in blood sugar, including:
- An improper diet
- Food allergies and sensitivities
- Skipping a meal
- Weight issues
- An eating disorder
- Endocrine disturbances
- Liver, heart or kidney disease
- A reaction to certain medications
- Stress
