Low Blood Pressure

Low blood pressure (hypotension) is less common than its opposite, and would often seem desirable. A severe or prolonged drop in blood pressure, however, can reduce the normal flow of oxygen and nutrients to the body’s vital organs, and cause a variety of symptoms.

Signs & Symptoms of Low Blood Pressure

In our experience, low blood pressure often manifests as:

  • Dizziness, lightheadedness, confusion
  • Fatigue
  • Blurred vision
  • Nausea
  • Pale skin
  • Shortness of breath
  • Feeling faint when standing up

In severe cases, severe hypotension can also result in shock and fainting. Over time, the heart and kidney can also be affected by chronic low blood pressure.

Causes of Low Blood Pressure

To our knowledge, low blood pressure is often caused by:

  • Blood loss from injury or surgery
  • Prolonged bed rest
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Allergic reactions
  • Heart problems
  • Hormonal issues
  • Certain medications
  • Pregnancy
  • Dehydration
