Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain (or lumbago) is a very common condition that involves the muscles, joints, nerves and bones of the lumbar region of the spine. Most individuals (as many as 80% of the population, according to some estimations) will be affected at least once during their lifetime.

Signs & Symptoms of Lower Back Pain

The patients we treat at the Nei Jing center of Chinese Medicine report symptoms such as:

  • Dull pain and aches, limited to the low back, especially after movements that involve lifting, twisting or bending
  • Acute pain or numbness radiating down the legs (sciatica)
  • Muscle spasms and tightness
  • Pain that becomes worse after sitting or standing for long periods of time
  • Sleep disturbances as a result of the pain

Causes of Lower Back Pain

Low back pain, in our experience, is a symptom that can be caused by a large number of underlying issues:

  • Benign muscular or skeletal issues such as sprains or strains
  • Mechanical causes such as trauma, scoliosis, disk herniation and fractures
  • Inflammatory conditions, especially arthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Rarely, degenerative changes in the backbone or an infection of the spine
  • Women very often experience low back pain as a result of pregnancy and various gynecological conditions

Weight gain, stress, lack of exercise, frequent exposure to a damp environment and a poor diet also tend to aggravate symptoms of back pain.

How We Treat Lower Back Pain

Our goal in the treatment of lower back pain is always to improve our patients’ quality of life, by diminishing the pain and reducing the need for medication, and helping the muscles of the lower back to relax and move more easily.

At the Nei Jing clinic in Jerusalem, we have been able to confirm that acupuncture is very effective in the treatment of back pain in general, and especially lower back pain. We often combine it with:

  • Laser acupuncture, according to the condition of each patient
  • Tuina medical massage and cupping
  • Chinese herbs formulas
  • Exercises and stretches that will help you deal with the pain at home

People Say

I had been suffering from pain in my lower back for almost a year, since my child was born. I couldn’t sit or stand for too long, I couldn’t travel for long distances. Sitting in the car was unbearable, and at the end of the day after work there were days when I couldn’t even hold my son for long because of the pain. It took me a long time to seek help, but it was very worth it. I did Tuina mostly, and some acupuncture sessions, and just a few months later, I am pain-free!

I worked for years in a factory, a job that required a lot of heavy lifting. I always suffered back pain from this, making it very uncomfortable to lie down or to sit for too long. Even on my free days, I couldn’t seem to be able to do as much as I wanted because of the pain. After changing to a new job, I decided to finally take care of the issue. I went to Nei Jing because they’d already helped with my daughter’s asthma, and was not disappointed! Three months of treatment were enough, and my back issues have completely cleared up.
