Stomach Pain

It is common for children to complain that their stomach hurts, though the cause is not always obvious or easy to diagnose. As such, it is often a source of anxiety for their parents. If the pain is severe or persistent, medical attention may be needed.

Signs & Symptoms of Stomach Pain

Although it can sometimes appear without any other symptoms, stomach pain in our experience can be accompanied by:

  • Fever and vomiting
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Acid reflux
  • Cramps
  • Bloating and gas

In very small children who cannot speak yet, parents can also look for:

  • Tears and fussiness
  • Restlessness or lethargy
  • Changes in apetite

Causes of Stomach Pain

Some of the most common causes of stomach pain in the children we treat at our clinic in Jerusalem include:

  • Dietary issues, including food sensitivities
  • Viral or bacterial infections
  • Swallowing soap and other substances
  • Worry and anxiety

Sometimes, abdominal pain can signal a more serious problem that requires immediate medical attention, such as:

  • Poisoning, if the pain is sudden and very severe
  • Appendicitis, if it is localised in the right side
  • Allergic reactions, if it is accompanied by skin rashes or trouble breathing

People Say

We didn’t realize immediately that our son had stomach pain - we noticed that he cried a lot and was more irritable than usual, but attributed it to teething at first. We realized that it was a digestive problem when he started to have diarrhea. At Nei Jing, we were told that he was suffering from food retention, a common problem in babies. We changed his feeding routine and did a few sessions of laser acupuncture, and everything is well now!

People Say

Our ten year old daughter suffered from stomach pain for a while, for an unknown reason. She suffered from constipation, bloating and nausea, with acid reflux practically every time she ate, but no definite cause could be found. She wasn’t a very big fan of the idea of needles at first, but she was very brave, and it was worth it! She’s got no more pain after meals now, and can eat all of her favourite foods again.
