Vaginal Dryness with Menopause
Vaginal dryness refers to the lack of adequate natural moisture in the vaginal area. Although it can occur at any age and for many reasons, it is a particularly frequent concern for women going through menopause, affecting at least 50% of them. Persistent vaginal dryness at that time can have a great impact on a woman’s self-confidence and quality of life.
Signs & Symptoms of Vaginal Dryness with Menopause
Our patients often report:
- Itching and soreness in the vaginal area
- Burning and irritation
- Pain during sex, difficulties reaching arousal and orgasm
- Urinary tract infections
- Changes in the appearance of the vulva and vagina (vaginal atrophy)
- Changes in vaginal discharge
As some of these symptoms resemble those of yeast infections and some STDs, they can also cause confusion for a lot of women.
Causes of Vaginal Dryness with Menopause
Most of these symptoms, to our knowledge, are caused by the drop in estrogen levels that occurs as menopause approaches. However, they can also be prolonged or aggravated by other factors such as overwork, poor dietary habits and chronic stress. A previous history of menstrual issues can also signal an increased risk of experiencing more severe symptoms during and after menopause.
